Oil Pulling 101

Recently, I’ve gotten into a little ancient remedy called oil pulling. For those of you who have never heard of oil pulling, it is an old Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for 20 minutes.

Why on earth would someone do that??
Well, believe it or not, the act of swishing oil in your mouth is believed to draw bacteria out of the mouth improving both oral health, as well as a person’s overall health. In Bruce Fife’s book, “Oil Pulling Therapy” he says, “all disease starts in the mouth.” He explains that just as the eyes are the window to the soul, the mouth is the window to the overall health of our bodies.

Why You Might Consider Doing it:
-  whitens teeth
-  clear skin conditions such as acne
-  eases arthritis
-  helps with asthma
- decreases headaches
- balances hormone
- heals infections
- aids with liver problems
- clears sinuses
- alleviates allergies
- prevents bad breath
- increases gum health
-eliminates tooth decay, plaque and gingivitis

How To Do It:
Step 1: Upon waking, place 1-3 teaspoons of melted coconut oil or other oil in mouth.

Step 2: Swish for 20 minutes in mouth. This might seem like a long time, but I like to do other things like check emails, make coffee, etc. to get my mind off the swishing.

Step 3: After 20 minutes, spit out the oil into a trash can. Be sure to spit out into a trash can to avoid build up in your pipes. In addition, do NOT swallow the oil as it is filled with bacteria.

Step 4: Wash your mouth out with water and brush your teeth as normal.

Timing Is Everything:
It is essential that you oil pull first thing in the morning before having anything to eat. If you happen to forget wait to oil pull before your next meal.
