Think Dirty is a free app that allows you to scan your beauty items and personal care products for potential carcinogens and other harmful ingredients.
Due to a family history of cancer, Think Dirty founder Lily Tse began to research the causes behind breast cancer. What she found in her research was a strong tie between hormone disrupting chemicals in beauty and personal care products and breast cancer. Looking further into the matter, she discovered that the cosmetics industry is not regulated like the food and drug sectors in this country.
How Do I Use It?
The Think Dirty App which launched in Summer 2013, now scans over 2,300 brands as well as 200,000 different products. All you have to do is look up or scan an item with a barcode and the app will give you "dirty meter" number ranging from zero to ten. The app gives you ratings in categories like: Carcinogenity, Developmental & Reproductive Toxicity, and Allergies & Immunotoxicities. In addition, it will also give you recommendations for chemical-free alternatives to the product that you are looking for.
